Continuing with the previous blog posts, the principle I would like to share today is the last one.

Aim for uniqueness or distinction.

When you design a logotype or logo, don’t blend into other’s identity.

Try designing your logotype to be different from competitors and existing logotypes.

Then your logotype will be recognisable and memorable.

Tips for uniqueness:

  • Do research and see what competitors and others own.

  • Don’t follow the trend.

  • Create visual interest or visual impact by using creative thinking and one of various technics such as cropping, rotating, and combining.

  • Start from black and white first to focus on form, which is the major element to create distinctiveness.

Measurement: Compare your design with competitors’ designs. Test with yourself or people, for example, try looking at a set of logos for short time and ask which one you can remember.
